About Us

Who we are

Pouakani Trust is a Charitable Trust that was established to receive the Pouakani Treaty settlement (Pouakani Waitangi Tribunal Claim Wai 33) on 19 March 2001 on behalf of the “Pouakani People”.
The “Pouakani People” are defined as the descendants of the original owners of the Pouakani Block as determined by the Maori Land Court on 4 August 1891.

The Pouakani Trust mission is to improve the well being of the Pouakani people, and this is provided by not only offering grant distribution, but also working closely with those of the community that may need assistance in other ways.

The trustees of Pouakani have been able to grow a significant asset base that has allowed our organisation to provide enrichment and support to a variety of activities (while ensuring they fall under the guidelines of the New Zealand Charities Act 2005). If you would like the opportunity to visit Titiraupenga Mountain, please get in contact about guided access.

With an aim to enrich the lives of our people, we ask our members to keep in touch with us, be involved in what we are doing and stand proud of who we are alongside us.

Nga Mihinui, Kia Ora Koutou Katoa. Ko Titiraupenga Te Maunga Ko Mihianga Te Awa Ko Pouakani Nga Whenua Ko John Hanita Paki taku ingoa Tena Koutou Katoa My association with the Pouakani People and their lands began as a child of 8yrs. From the beginning of the Pouakani claim in the 1970’s, to its eventual settlement and conclusion in the year 2000, I was fortunate enough to witness events and meet people that led to the formation of the Pouakani Trust. These memories and histories are a data-base that my mind and heart draw upon when I contemplate the future of Pouakani. Like our People the Trust is unique, because it was not a product of an Iwi claim. Our people belong to several Iwi and different regional Hapu. We have achieved many goals & aspirations over the years. The journey continues every day, and sustains my aroha, passion and enthusiasm for Pouakani, its People and their Lands. Kia mau koe ki nga kupu o ou tupuna (Hold fast to the words of your ancestors) John Hanita Paki (Jnr)
